The NBA’s Ultimate All-Time 1-on-1 Tournament

Who’s the greatest one-on-one player in the history of basketball?

That’s what we wanted to know heading into the 2019-20 season, and it was up to you to answer the question by voting in each round of our all-time tournament, which included literally every player who’s logged playing time at the NBA level.

That’s right. No arbitrary choices for inclusion here. Everyone got to play.

The bracket was broken down into 16 distinct regions: 5’10” and under, 5’11”, 6’0″, all the way through 7’1″ and up (heights determined by Basketball Reference). Within their regions, players were sorted by career win shares (alphabetical by last name as a tiebreaker) for seeding purposes. Once the 16 regional champions were determined, they faced off in the tournament of champions to determine the ultimate one-on-one icon.

Games, though imaginary, were played to 21 by ones and twos. Make it, take it. Call your own fouls. Standard one-on-one rules applied.

Imagine that the players were transported to our tournament by a time machine that captures them at their peak level. For retired players, that means the highest level they ever reached. For current players, projection was not allowed; you had to imagine Zion Williamson at his present level rather than what he might become years down the road.
